GOBLE FAMILY REUNION
Friday, June 29,
2007
We gathered off the main
lobby in the Montclair room at the Grand Plaza in Branson starting around
2:00pm and began to set up our displays and meet cousins from around the
country. There was a last minute room change made by the hotel because our
group was so large.
After checking in and
setting up many went to dinner and took in some of the entertainment/shows
available. The weather was a bit dreary, but it didn't affect the mood of our
group.
Displays included:
Saturday, June 30, 2007
The hotel breakfast was
great and we took up a rather large part of the dinning room.
We opened the Montclair room
about 8:30 am and began to greet cousins, hand out name tags, t-shirts,
programs and gifts provided, which included GOBLE letter openers, monogrammed
M&Ms, Rules of the Road, travel tips book contributed by the author, our
cousin, Wayne Goble and Family Tree DNA fliers.
Warren and Robert Steen took
photographs of family groups and handed out tickets for our door prize drawing.
I (Evelyn Steen) opened the meeting with a Welcome
and some announcements. We welcomed 11 children this year and prepared a table
for arts and crafts and activities in the rear of the room.
Our first speaker was
Barbara Volker with, I’m Eligible for DAR membership, so who cares? Steven
Hurst followed Barbara with information on DAR/SAR recognition of Daniel
Goble’s (both 6th and 7th generations) Revolutionary War service.
Before we gathered for our
group photograph on the front steps of the hotel everyone introduced themselves
and told where they were from. We then adjourned to the front steps for our
large group photograph. The timing was perfect. As soon as we came back in the
building the rains began!
We assembled in the “Sunset Room” on the 9th floor
for our luncheon. Since we were running a bit ahead of schedule we had some
unplanned entertainment from the grandson of Charlie and Paulette Goble; Conrad
Mitchell Myers
(Age 4) who
sang America the Beautiful. Idaleen Conklin played the piano and we sang a few
songs.
Paul and Barbara Volker,
Ruth Goble and Warren Steen preformed our planned Musical Entertainment
accompanied by Idaleen Conklin on the piano.
A Celebration of Family Life included:
·
Childhood
- "Vespers" (Christopher Robin is saying his prayers.),
Barbara
·
Young
and not so young love - "Some Enchanted Evening", Paul
·
Marriage
and family - "Sunrise, Sunset", Paul and Barbara
·
Faith
and family - "God, We Thank You for Our People", Paul, Ruth, Barbara
and Warren (Our Goble Quartet)
·
Life
Endings - "Oh Lord, Support Us", Paul and Barbara
·
The talent in our family is amazing!
Milton Goble gave the
blessing and we had a fabulous lunch buffet. We would definitely recommend
Jack's Plaza View to anyone visiting Branson.
After lunch we took a short
break!
We gathered again in our
meeting room about 1:15 and nearly everyone was eager to get started. Dick
Wadding and Evelyn Steen told a few Goble stories and then we began the
program.
A Power Point presentation:
Where in the World are we From? Presented by Evelyn Steen was followed by
questions. A slide show by Keith Goble entitled My Trip to England included
photographs of St. Mary's church of Aldingbourne, West Sussex, England and the
baptismal font used at the time of Thomas Goble's christening.
Door prizes and Awards
followed the program. Glori Lund did the honors of drawing tickets for the door
prizes.
Our first item was a
painting by yours truly, Evelyn Steen. (Pink Hollyhocks is a giclee print of an
award winning, fluid acrylic, painting) won by Wanda Dunn. Our next item was 2
tickets to a Magic Show, contributed by the Grand Plaza won by Zach Adams. Norma

of about $407.09 to carry forward after the July newsletter is mailed.
NEWSLETTER Evelyn Steen will complete and mail the July
newsletter, which is the membership drive.
This newsletter will be Evelyn's last one as newsletter editor. Sally Goble Meyers (sgmeyer11@comcast.net ) has generously
accepted the newsletter editor position for the next 3-year term. I'm sure she'll do a great job.
NEXT REUNION Barbara Volker has agreed to be the
chairperson for the 2010 reunion, which is to be held in the western part of
the country. Anyone wanting to assist please contact Barbara at: bgvolker@comcast.net .
NEW BUSINESS Discussion took place on the Goble Family Tree DNA
Project. We need a proven Thomas Goble descendant to have the testing done to
establish the DNA markers for others to match. A motion was made to begin a DNA
fund for the project and 5 Goble descendants of Thomas volunteered to take the
test. A total of $140 was contributed to the cause.
FUTURE OF OUR ASSOCIATION After 14 years I am
retiring as the president/treasurer and newsletter editor of our association. I
have absolutely enjoyed every reunion and meeting so many new cousins from all
around the country. Barbara Volker has volunteered to accept the position and
will assume the responsibility of President/Treasurer and newsletter
distributor. I am confident that Barbara will do a great job as your leader and
I think our future as a family association is bright. I will continue to
maintain and develop our website and now I will have more time to do the
research I love as your historian/genealogist. We still have a few vacancies on
the Executive Board; so if you want to help make our Goble Family Association
strong, please contact our new president, Barbara
Volker.

DNA
Our DNA project is finally taking off. We have several volunteers ready to be tested in our Thomas Goble
tree.
Our Goals:
·
Confirm
relationships with a specific ancestor where we have only circumstantial
evidence.
·
Compare
Gobles in other states/provinces/countries where we believe but have no proof
our earliest-known ancestor was born.
·
Determine
whether our lines are German, English, French, etc., and possibly mixed with
Native American.
You can read all about it from our
webpage (http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~goble/homepage/DNA/gobledna.htm). Our
new DNA Project coordinator is Revis N. Leonard, 3Nunn Place,
Uvalde, Texas 78801-4250. (830) 591-1900 – Revis_stamps@sbcglobal.net. If you are interested in joining the
project, please contact Revis.

EILEEN S. GOBLE[2] of
Moscow died Friday, May 25, 2007, at Good
Samaritan Village in Moscow. She was 86.
Eileen was born July 1, 1920, in St. Louis, to Harry and Irene
Torrance Russell. She grew up and attended school at Wellston, Mo., graduating
from high school there.
She married Karl K. Goble Feb. 27, 1946, in Wellston.
The couple moved to Boise, where she went to work for Ada County
as a secretary. She was a homemaker for several years while her sons were young
and later went to work for the Boise School District as a secretary, where she
stayed until her retirement. The couple moved to Moscow in 2002 to be near

ANTHONY GOBLE, Tony Goble was born in 1943
in Drenewydd/MidWales (Anthony Barton); he died on 13th April 2007. He
studied art from 1961 to 1964 at the Wrexham School of Art and was a leading
member of the Welsh Group, exhibiting at the Royal Academy, the Royal College
of Art and the National Portrait Gallery in London. He was Artist in Residence
and Gallery Director at Llanover Hall Cardiff since 1979.
Mark Jones,
art historian & journalist, remarks: "Goble's work has a robustness
and a vitality - along with a disregard for the conventions of gravity and
perspective - that is all his own. Often strange signs and symbols collide with
more traditional painterly images in Goble's work, to create an air of mystery
and of collusion with the fantastic. But he is anxious to point out that it's a
fiendish plot in which we can all conspire (quoted from Tony Goble 25 years
in residence).
As the
artist himself says:" My work is personal but it is not a secret. You do
not have to be a member of The Goble Club to understand it. It is not esoteric.
During my years at Llanover my paintings have sharpened, my colours have
intensified and my beard has grown longer."[3] Read more at: http://news.independent.co.uk/people/obituaries/article2499316.ece
